Many hikers at Ambleside use the buses for some hikes as they can allow more variation to the hikes. Google Ambleside Buses .

Todd Crag by Ambleside

Todd Crag 734ft
This hike starts from the north Car Park in Ambleside, and goes over scenic stepping stones, then up to the top for great views over Ambleside and Lake Windermere.

Wansfell Pike by Ambleside

Wansfell Pike 1,581ft
This hike starts from the north Car Park in Ambleside, and goes up from the west alongside the mountain, then up the steep northwest side. You can also hike down its east side to the small village of Troutbeck.

Fairfield Mountain

Fairfield 2,864ft
This hike normally starts from the north car park in Ambleside and goes up over Low Pike and High Pike, then returns down over Great Rig and Nab Scar to the village of Rydal, then a walk through Rydal estate back to the car park.

Red Screes mountain by Ambleside image

Red Screes 2,546ft
This hike normally starts from the Kirkstone Pass Inn car park 3 miles east of Ambleside, and goes straight up the steep east side. This car park is about 1,500ft, so the hike is only about 1,100ft to the top for great views.

Silver How at Grasmere

Silver How 1,293ft
This hike starts from the centre of Grasmere, about 4 miles north of Ambleside. There are three large pay and display car parks, as the village is so popular. Regular buses run between Keswick, Grasmere, Ambleside and Windermere. The hike to the top gives great views over the village and Grasmere Lake. You can also hike over the southwest side to the village of Langdale. There are about ten hotels in Grasmere with beer gardens, so many places for a drink and meal after the hike.

Loughrigg Fell

Loughrigg Fell 1,099ft
This hike starts from the White Moss car park or the centre of Grasmere, about 4 miles north of Ambleside, goes down the west side of Grasmere Lake, then follows one of a few paths from the south side of the lake to the top. There are three pay and display car parks in Grasmere, with one close to the top of the lake, next to the Gold Rill Hotel. You can extend the hike over to 735ft Todd Crag that is connected, for views down over Ambleside and Lake Windermere. You can also hike down into Ambleside.

Harrison Stickle

Harrison Stickle 2,414ft
The car parks for this hike are situated at the New Dungeon Ghyl Hotel in the extremely scenic Langdale Valley, about 7 miles west of Ambleside. The hike goes up past the hotel, waterfalls and a large tarn. The hike can be extended to other mountains that are referred to as the Langdale Pikes.

Old Man of Coniston

Old Man of Coniston 2,634ft
The car parks for this hike are situated in Coniston itself, and up on the mountainside by Coniston, about 8 miles southwest of Ambleside. The main route is up through and old quarry and past a scenic tarn. There is also a loup round other mountains that are popular.

Helvellyn Car Park

Helvellyn 3,117ft
The car park at Thirlmere is situated about 10 miles north of Ambleside with a bus stop and regular buses that run between Keswick, Grasmere, and Ambleside. This is a fairly steep route for Helvellyn, over Lower Man, then a hike on to Helvellyn itself. On the east side of Helvellyn is Swirled Edge and Striding Edge, for the more adventurous.
